When it comes to fishing and casting Beginning sports fisherman and anglers have the oft mistaken notion that long casts are the sure sign of a good, competent angler. For the most part they are wrong. Almost anyone can learn to heave a fishing line long and great distances across the water – whether it be off a bank off the bank of a river or off a fishing boat at Lake Manitoba Narrows. It can be best said that in fishing, the ability to make those long casts are of less value than the intrinsic or learnt abilities to make accurate casts – whether dropping your fly, lure or bait exactly and perfectly where and when you want it, without snagging bushes, the lake bottom seaweed or simply scaring away those big time fish of your fishing and angling dreams.
As with most things in life – its not as if we are all born with the intrinsic gift of being able to put that lure or bait dead on as if we are using a sophisticated , highly accurate laser pointing and delivering device. There is one and only way and means to develop dead on and highly accurate as well as consistent casting skills. That is to practice. Its all practice and more practice until casting is like a trained heated passion in your fishing life.
It is not necessary at all or essential to waste your valuable fishing time, on or nearby the waters, you can easily practice your casting and casting skills to perfection on dry land. That is assuming that you have the physical space available and patient neighbors. It
is best overall to use the same rig – that is the same rod and reel as you would normally utilize on your fishing trips and ventures. This way , in addition to greatly improving your casting angling and fishing skills you will become even more familiar with , handy with and skillful with that specific rod and reel of yours. However when it comes to practicing your fishing and angling casting skills on dry land , do not use the standard fishing hooks or lures that you would use on the water in your fishing activities and events . Instead use either a lure with no hooks or even simply a lead fishing weight or weights, more commonly called lead fishing “sinkers”. This way you will eliminate the chances of snagging someone – yourself, a neighbor, the neighbor’s dog for example with the catch of the fishing hook or the sharp hooks at the ends of an active and set fishing lure. On top of that you will reduce damage by snaring the lawn, shade trees and bushes of either yours or your neighbor’s lawn and yards. If the general overall weights of the lure or lead sinker attached to your line is approximately the same overall weight and size of your general overall standard fishing setup and get go – then it’s all the same when it comes to practicing your casting. Overall it’s greatly to your fishing benefit, and ability to cast most accurately and consistently if you maintain this practice drill with this setup on dry land.
Overall it’s to your great benefit as a sports fisherman and angler. Practice long, hard and practice those fishing casts often long before the fishing season starts. Now is the time.
